The chemical composition of yellow wax stone is primarily silicon dioxide, containing oxides such as Al₂O₃, Fe₂O₃, CaO, MgO, K₂O, Na₂O, and MnO, as well as trace elements including Cu, Pb, Zn, and Cr.
Its primary mineral component is chalcedony-a cryptocrystalline silica colloid-consisting of authigenic quartz ranging from fine to extremely fine (micro-granular) in size; it also contains trace amounts of minerals such as sericite, apatite, tourmaline, iron oxides, and manganese oxides, but lacks allogenic detrital quartz grains.
Varieties such as black, gray, or green wax stones contain dispersed pyrite (FeS2), while specimens exhibiting black dendritic or "water-weed" patterns (dendrites) contain secondary pyrolusite (MnO₂·MnO·nH₂O). Additionally, yellow wax stones found near granite contact zones often contain trace rare-earth elements in addition to ferrous iron (Fe²⁺). These stones generally occur as cryptocrystalline-to-phanerocrystalline aggregates with a granular structure, typically forming dense, massive, or nodular bodies.
