Artificial Rock Fabrication Process

The "stone-sculpting" method is a unique technique for rockery construction in Lingnan gardens, involving two main stages: creating the framework (armature) and applying the surface finish. The framework is constructed using iron bars to form the rockery's shape, with large-scale structures often filled with stones or bricks. The surface finish involves either "pattern matching" (using natural stone veneers) or "pattern rendering" (using mortar), which determines the rockery's final appearance.

 

In modern rockery construction, a steel-bar framework is first erected to define the mountain's shape, followed by a wire mesh covering and a base-layer plastering. A second plastering stage is used to sculpt rock textures-such as undulations and folds-requiring the craftsman to possess fundamental rock-sculpting skills. "Real stone paint" is sprayed on to replicate the speckled, granular appearance of natural stone. Soil is packed into crevices to support plantings, or decorative elements are added to enhance the visual effect.

 

The construction of large-scale modern rockeries (particularly for slope stabilization) typically involves three steps: first, the steep slope is reinforced with rock bolts; next, a steel framework is constructed over the slope, and the surface is sculpted into a rock-face finish using cement mortar reinforced with fiberglass; finally, circular and natural curvilinear forms are employed, combined with varied rockery styles, to create diverse landscape effects.

 

Ensuring the safety of the internal structure is critical; the framework-welded from angle iron and steel bars-must undergo anti-rust treatment. The wire mesh must be fully embedded within the cement, with no mesh exposed on the surface. Load-bearing contact points must meet standards and distribute stress evenly. A robust steel structure is fundamental to the rockery's longevity.

 

Coloring materials for rockeries must offer excellent weather resistance; water-based polymer colorants or acrylic pigments mixed with water-based resin emulsions are recommended, as they can maintain their appearance for over a decade. The coloring should harmonize with the surrounding environment. Planting pockets are often incorporated into the design during construction to allow for the planting of vegetation that complements and enhances the rockery's aesthetic.
