Yellow Wax Stone-also known as yellow chalcedony or Huanglong Jade-is a type of quartzite named for its waxy surface luster and yellowish hue. Its chemical composition is primarily silicon dioxide, with chalcedony as the main mineral component. It formed when siliceous deposits underwent metamorphism into massive quartzite due to geological shifts and conditions such as nearby geothermal activity or volcanism; subsequent weathering and erosion exposed the stone to acidic soil containing trivalent iron, resulting in its characteristic yellow color. Yellow Wax Stone features a dense, cryptocrystalline gel structure; its oily, waxy surface is the product of low-temperature weathering, and the stone is prized for its vivid colors, high toughness, and great hardness. In China, deposits are concentrated along the outer edge of the Yangtze Plate in South China; the stones originated from chemically formed siliceous rocks in marine troughs, a process linked to submarine volcanic activity. Following its formation, the stone underwent mild metamorphism and weathering.

Yellow Wax Stone is classified according to various criteria: by origin and occurrence (mountain-mined, transported/alluvial, and pebble/boulder types); by physical properties and inclusions (yellow, white, red, black, and variegated/patterned wax stones); and by texture (jelly-like, resin-like, crystalline, fine-grained, and coarse-grained wax stones).

As a traditional Chinese ornamental stone, it is evaluated based on texture, color, clarity, size, and craftsmanship; factors such as density, fineness, translucency, light reflectivity, degree of jade-like transformation, and the quality of carving all determine its grade. Authenticity is verified by examining physical characteristics-distinguishing it from similar jade-like stones-and observing changes in properties resulting from enhancement treatments. The carving process involves material selection, observation, composition planning, creative sculpting, and fine detailing.
