The construction of artificial rockeries is a common decorative technique in landscape engineering; it involves manually sculpting forms that mimic natural rock formations and is widely used in the landscape design of hotels, parks, schools, and other venues.
An artificial rockery consists of an internal framework and an external sculpted layer. The internal framework typically utilizes steel reinforcement bars, which are welded or tied together to form an irregular three-dimensional structure that ensures overall stability. The external layer is based on cement mortar; through layered application and manual carving, it replicates the textures, folds, and crevices of natural rock. Some techniques incorporate fiber-reinforcement materials to enhance crack resistance. For coloring, mineral pigments and water-based coatings are applied via spraying or brushing to reproduce the natural color variations found in real stone.
