Achieving a natural appearance relies on modern synthetic materials. Artificial rockwork generally falls into two main categories: cement-based and fiberglass-reinforced plastic (FRP).

 

Cement-based artificial rock is the more traditional and mainstream option. It utilizes a steel rebar framework shaped with wire mesh, which is then covered in cement mortar for sculpting. Before the cement fully sets, artisans employ various tools to apply techniques akin to traditional landscape painting-such as texturing, rubbing, dotting, and tinting-to replicate every fold and hollow of real rock. Coloration is achieved either by incorporating mineral pigments directly into the cement mix or through multi-layered, hand-painted finishes applied after molding, creating the subtle color transitions and weathered effects characteristic of natural stone.

 

Fiberglass-reinforced plastic (FRP) artificial rock is lighter, making it ideal for large-scale, hollow, or portable landscape features. Production involves creating a mold and then casting the piece using fiberglass-reinforced plastic. The surface also requires meticulous hand-finishing to convincingly simulate the texture of natural rock.

 

Regardless of the material used, success hinges on the artisan's mastery of material properties and exquisite surface-finishing techniques, allowing cold, synthetic materials to take on the organic vitality of nature.
