Introduction To Wild Mountain Stone

"Wild mountain stone"-also known as "ancient stone" or simply "mountain stone"-refers to naturally occurring, exposed landscape stones found on mountain surfaces. Rich in calcium, their surfaces naturally host growths of moss. Typically dark gray or blue-gray in color, the stone is dense and highly versatile, making it widely used in landscape projects such as Japanese *karesansui* (dry landscape) gardens, stream embankments, rockeries, feature walls, and lawn accents.

 

This stone originates primarily from Yingde City, Guangdong Province; "Ying Stone" is a local specialty of Yingde and a recognized Chinese National Geographical Indication product. Through processing, it can be crafted into specialized forms like water basins and stone slices, offering both functional utility and natural aesthetic appeal in "New Chinese-style" courtyards and traditional garden designs.

 

In Japanese dry landscape gardens, the stone embodies the Zen aesthetic of "one stone, one world," while in Chinese gardens, it reflects the traditional art of "arranging mountains and managing water." Also known as "cavernous stone" or "rockery stone," it is formed over long periods through the erosion of limestone and is categorized into two types: "water stone" and "dry stone."
